A few pictures and a conversation about the establishment of the Islamic Center on James A. Reed Road. H.N. Khan and Dr. A.R. Mir reminisce about A.F. Kanaan (Fanoun) and other pioneers of KC’s immigrant Muslims in the early 70s. Their efforts resulted in the establishment of the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City, and the Islamic Center they founded became the nucleus of the many Islamic centers in the region. Culturally Speakin's Pedal Against Hate Bike Ride, Lawrence, Kansas, May 1, 2010
A partnership of Lawrence social organizations hosted the inaugural Pedal Against Hate Community Bike Ride on May 1, starting at the Islamic Center of Lawrence, 1917 Naismith Drive.
The event combined an anti-hate message with a bike ride through Lawrence. Bicyclists rode to South Park where Ed Chasteen, a retired professor of sociology from William Jewell College, talked about his experience of biking from Disney World to Disneyland, and about how the journey taught him to “like other people.”
The event was hosted by The Lawrence Alliance, The Islamic Center of Lawrence, the Interfaith Initiative, and Culturally Speaking, an organization that works to facilitate positive interactions among people of different faiths and cultures.

Bassam Helwani Speaking at MIC Inaugural Meeting
The newly formed Midland Islamic Council held its inaugural dinner meeting at Pierson Auditorium at the University of Missouri-Kansas City on April 16, 2010. Bassam Helwani of Culturally Speaking presented a slideshow of the history of Muslims in Kansas City.
